27 Gigawatts of Renewable Projects Pressured By Weak Energy Targets

The weak targets that were suggested for the national energy guarantee will put pressure on the 27 gigawatts of renewable energy projects that are proposed for Australia. The said projects would produce an equal to 17 Hazelwood power stations with half of Australia’s power requirement provided by renewables as reported by The Guardian. 

Since the government’s 2020 renewable energy target has already exceeded by the present projects currently under construction, many of the planned renewable projects will not get the grants they need – this is according to the latest renewable energy index produced by Green Energy markets and funded by GetUp.

The target includes:

• 33,000 gigawatt-hours to be produced by large-scale renewables by 2020
• Solar and bio-energy projects are currently being built which will add 40,000 gigawatt-hours
• The planned projects would provide 13,443 jobs during construction

There’s going to be another investment drought in renewables unless we get better targets than those proposed under Malcolm Turnbull’s NEG.
