AGL Has Proposed To Go With Renewables, Storage Batteries and Gas Instead Of Liddell

AGL has proposed that they will go for renewables, batteries and gas power rather than continue using the old Liddell power station. The energy company has outlined a list of issues with the federal government’s request to extend the plant’s life or sell it as reported by The Guardian.

AGL has outlined a plan to replace the 8 terawatt-hours produced by Liddell every year. According to AGL CEO Andy Vesey, thousands of megawatts of renewable generation can be constructed by the year 2022 and with over 1,000 megawatts of a flexible generation with a range of new and proven technologies.

While it may be technically possible to extend the life of the power station, the costs of doing so in a way that ensures that the plant is even moderately reliable are certain to be substantial.

Andy Vesey in their assessment about Liddell said that:

• He has suggested the 750 megawatts of gas generation can be built by AGL
• That the company is considering gas developments in New South Wales
• Specifically, flagged gas reciprocating engine technology will be part of the energy solution mix
• A proposed 250-megawatt battery storage to be built at Liddell including residential batteries
