EnergyAustralia’s New Monitoring System for Solar & Battery Systems

EnergyAustralia has introduced a smart solar system called “Redback” which they say should pay for itself in under 10 years as reported by The Australian Financial Review.

The system assesses external (weather) and internal (user behaviour) conditions and allows the customer to control and monitor the entire system.

The idea behind this technology is to allow solar owners to have some control and get exactly what they want out of their system.

Advantages include:

  • The system is like a small virtual power plant.
  • The Redback software can learn from user habits and expected changes in weather.
  • EnergyAustralia estimates that an average house using 8,000 kilowatt-hour/year would save about $1,500/year with a Redback system, 4.9-kilowatt solar array and 3.3 kilowatt-hour battery.
