ABC News reported that Australia may be the leader in the world for household solar energy use, but millions of Aussies are being locked out of the possible benefits of solar because of decreasing home ownership and rising electricity prices.

According to a 2016 census, more than 2.6 million people in NSW can’t have solar PVs installed because they are renting or living in an apartment block. Without their own roof to install solar on, they have to deal with electricity prices head on and have no way of supplementing electricity from renewable sources.

What can apartment blocks and renters do?

  • Solar panels can be attached to individual units or common areas.
  • Renters can purchase portable solar panels and use them to charge rechargeable appliances.
  • Renters can support community solar farms so that they can buy energy for their own use.
