Chief Minister Michael Gunner states that the Northern Territory is targeting 50% renewable energy by the year 2030 as reported by ABC News.

An independent panel presented 11 recommendations in its final Roadmap to Renewables report. One of the suggestions includes making renewable energy as the main point of the Northern Territory’s economic policy.

Other suggestions included:

  • The Northern territory to lessen its reliance on gas and diesel
  • Increase the use of solar power until it becomes the region’s main energy source
  • Change in market rules to encourage business investment to create energy jobs in boosting the economy and population growth.

Mr. Gunner announced $4.5 million to fund co-contribution grants of up to $1,000 for households to increase their use of renewable energy. The grant can be used for installing solar PV systems, smart meters, solar batteries, solar hot water, efficient lighting and efficiency audits.

The renewable energy goal will need to have a 46% increase in solar generation within 13 years. The government said they would also provide $750,000 to the NTs Power and Water Corporation to develop a new system model for the Northern Territory.
