The 50-megawatt Phase 1 of the Kidston Solar project in Australia officially reached financial close on February 14 according to PV Tech.

The project was developed by generation development firm Genex Power in Northern Queensland, with plans for another 270 megawatts for the second phase.

Once completed, this will be the largest solar project in Australia. The firm is also developing an accompanying 250 megawatt Kidston pumped storage hydro project, which it found could be connected to the solar plant.

The project is situated 270 kilometres northwest of Townsville and will produce around 145,000 megawatt-hours per year, which will produce enough clean energy to power 26,484 Australian households. The electricity from the first phase solar project will be sold through a PPA support by the Queensland government.
