The arguments between the proponents of renewable energy and believers of traditional oil-based power in Australia is escalating after an intensely hot summer marked by power outages and finger-pointing system failures according to the Nikkei Asian Review.
As many Australians know, South Australia has been an early adopter of wind power. It’s also the centre of the debate after the statewide blackout last September 2016 after a severe storm and then followed by more power system failures last month during 40 degree Celsius heat wave.
Chief Executive of BHP Billiton, Andrew Mackenzie, has entered the picture. Mackenzie said his company would not look at a major expansion of the Olympic Dam unless there is a reliable and affordable power source within Southern Australia. He also said that he’s sincerely hoping that the state and the federal government would address some of the great difficulties it will face as a result of poor provision power within South Australia.
