Renewable energy production in South Australia has reached record levels, with the state positioned to meet its 50% renewable energy target eight years ahead of schedule.

The latest reports obtained from sources including the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) shows South Australia has derived 53% of its electricity in the past 12 months from sun and wind.

The last AEMO report that was delivered in August of 2016 showed 42% of the State’s power came from renewable sources in the 2015-2016 financial year. It will give another annual update in the coming months but publicly available data collected by the Opposition detail a further green power surge to 53%, in the past 12 months since the Port Augusta power station closed.

Tom Koutsantonis, mineral resources and energy minister said he would await the next official AEMO update on the state’s energy mix before reviewing South Australia’s progress against the green target.
