ABC News reported that Whyalla mayor Lyn Breuer is hoping that her city could cooperate with Port Augusta 80 kilometres away to make the plan into reality. The Regional South Australian cities have seen several energy projects that have been announced over the past year with the construction of a new solar power station in Port Augusta that started early this year.

Last October 2017, British billionaire and Whyalla steelworks owner Sanjeev Gupta announced that he has approved a plan that was worth $700 million for solar, pumped hydro and battery storage and with 200 megawatts of solar PVs at Whyalla.

Port Augusta mayor Sam Johnson believed that the region is already becoming a hub for renewable energy and will be willing to work with Whyalla in expanding its renewable technologies in the region.
