Flinder’s Island, located northeast off Tasmania has ditched their traditional diesel-powered generators and switched to renewable energy as reported by ABC News.

The island will turn on its Hybrid Energy Hub in December – enabling the island to be powered by 60% renewable energy on average. In time, generators can be completely switched off and the island may run on 100% renewable power.

The hybrid system will use solar, wind, battery storage and other technologies to remove the dependence on expensive shipped-in diesel.
