Trash Becomes Power in South Australia

South Australia is turning their rubbish into renewable sources of cheap power.  It’s a first in Australia, where a landfill centre near Adelaide will run a solar farm and extract methane from decomposing rubbish to generate enough electricity to power South Australian homes as reported by The Australian Business Review.

Other Australian landfills have made processes in collecting methane to generate electricity, but this is the first one to combine solar and biogas.

The combined solar and methane plant key factors are:

  • The combined base load and solar PV technologies will generate power 24/7
  • The combined electricity generated from the two sources will be 11,000 megawatt-hours every year
  • The combined electricity generated will help power 1,800 homes
