World’s First Solar Train has Been Launched In Byron Bay, Australia

The world’s first solar-powered railway will start operation in Byron Bay this week as reported by the Traveller.

The project is lead by the owners of resort Elements of Byron and their development director Jeremy Holmes.

The Byron Bay Railroad Company has restored a vintage 1949 NSW train that will carry passengers between North Beach Station and the centre of Byron bay town.

• The train ride will cost $3.00 for a one-way, 3-kilometre trip.
• The train ride takes about 7 minutes.
• The train can take up 100 passengers plus luggage and standing room for some passengers.
• The 70-tonne train uses 6.5 kilowatts of solar panels on its roof that charges a big lithium battery.
• The train shed uses a 30-kilowatt solar power system.

Talks have been made for at least another stop to be installed along the line at Discovery Park between Elements and Byron. The train will start full service by January next year.
