Solar Homes Program – Making Solar More Accessible in Victoria

Energy Matters reports that the Victorian Government is gearing up to provide subsidies for solar power installations for around 650,000 homes in the state over the next 10 years.

The government is calling it the Solar Homes program. Here’s how it will work:

  • Pay half the initial cost of a solar power system
  • The rest is paid off over a four year period
  • The four year pay-back is interest-free.

The program will increase the number of households in the state with solar to 1 million and will help Victoria reach its renewable target.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews tweeted about the program on August 19 2018:

Andrews said in a later tweet, “Liberals will go into overdrive, because they support the dominance of the big, private energy companies and they are opposed to anything that puts power into the hands of families.”

Bills are going up. Wages aren’t. So families deserve this.

Who is eligible for the Solar Homes program?

The government has projected that the program will be available to households:

  • With an income of up to $180,000
  • With home values up to $3 million
  • Making 9/10 households in the state eligible.

Can’t have solar? Andrews has also announced an offer for households where solar isn’t able to be installed:
