The construction of 12 new solar power plants will triple Australia’s large-scale solar power production as stated by ARENA according to ABC News.
The agency has announced a $92 million investment in six plants in Queensland, five in New South Wales and one in Western Australia. The agency also said it would increase the country’s large-scale solar capacity from 240 megawatts to 720 megawatts, which will provide enough energy to power about 150,000 average Australian homes.
ARENA said the projects were also expected to unlock almost $1 billion of commercial investment and boost regional Australian economies.
The largest plant will be raised on Queensland’s Darling Downs and will be able to generate up to 110 megawatts of power. Other Queensland locations include Dalby, Longreach, Collinsville, the Whitsundays, Kidston and Oakley.
The New South Wales locations include Manildra, Parkes, Griffith, Glen Innes and Dubbo.
Minister Mark Bailey of Queensland Energy said it was a momentous day and the beginning of a new industry in Queensland with 6 projects. The promise was delivered by the government in establishing large-scale renewable energy industry, and to act on climate change while providing new jobs and diversifying the economy.
Four of the projects in Queensland have also gained State Government support through long-term revenue contracts.
This is a big win for renewable energy in Australia!
